Hamamatsu Municipal Sala Music Hall Now Open!
Hamamatsu City opened the new Municipal Sala Music Hall on 1 June 2021. It was built to replace the old Education and Culture Hall which was closed due to dilapidation in 2015, with two goals: to promote music and cultural activities among local residents, and to foster young talents who will lead music culture to next generation.
The facility is expected to be a hotspot for students and residents to engage in music activities and to present their work in front of an audience. The facility also has many functions and is installed with the latest technology.
The max capacity of the main hall is 1,414 seats, it is the second biggest venue in Hamamatsu with the biggest venue being the main hall of Act City Hamamatsu, the venue of the Hamamatsu International Piano Competition. The acoustics in the hall are excellent due to its vertical shoe-box design, and sound-absorbing curtains on the sides. Sound resonance is adjustable by opening or closing the curtains. Therefore, the hall can realize the best sound resonance for a variety of performances: symphonies, marches, a variety of pop music, choirs etc..
In addition to the halls, there are three multi-purpose rooms that can be used for rehearsals, practice and lectures etc. They are fitted with grand pianos from world-famous piano makers, YAMAHA and KAWAI with excellent sound proofing & insulation. It is possible to practice like it is the actual main performance in these rooms. All the halls and rooms in the facility also have equipment installed with online streaming capabilities.
According to Sala Music Hall’s calendar, there will be events that line up with the vision of the facility: Promotion of Music and Cultural Activities among Residents and Fostering Young Talents. The events include regular concerts by high school brass bands in the city, a workshop where local musicians and high school students create music together, a Japanese Taiko drumming concert and even English classes for children in cooperation with a local university. We hope that the new music hall will be a source of inspiration for many future musicians and cultural creators.
